Custody refers to spending time in a youth correctional facility. In PEI, this is the PEI Youth Centre located in Summerside.
Custody is used as a last resort. All other possible sentences must be considered before a judge sentences a young person to time in a correctional facility.
Any young person under the age of 18 who is sentenced to custody will serve that time in a youth facility. Once the young person turns 18, he or she may be transferred to an adult facility.
